FRI 16 DEC: SAMBA SCHOOL AT MY MOON

Samba School: a free-form exploration of the intricacies of Brazilian culture
presented by Projectile Arts, Poisé and BR-278

Enjoy a hypnotic array of live music, film, poetry, capoeira, DJs and video installation/performance. Participants include Maracatu NY, Suzy Khimm, Akim Funk Buddha, Kaesha KvK, Osa Crafts, DJs Lightbolt, & John-Henry and The Omulu Guanabara Capoeira Group plus video design by Marc Gamboa. The event will reveal lesser-known elements of Brazilian culture and raise awareness about the ongoing cultural activities of Projectile Arts and Poisé, while bringing up Brazil's December summer heat to thaw our hearts at My Moon, Brooklyn's most enchanting new venue. If you remember the amazing space from our Intuition III gala in April, you have some idea of what to expect. 9.30pm: Amiti - Pure Love, songs from the Amazon with Shy on Cello and Devi Michal on Percussion

10pm: Kaesha KvK & Tonya Ridgley Butoh-inspired afro-caribean dance performance with tribalist music accompaniment.

10.30: Suzy Khimm shuttles her kinesthetic poetry between Rio de Janeiro and New York. She has performed and presented work in spaces as diverse as HERE Arts Center, City Hall Park, Casa Tá Na Rua, outside the Victoria's Secret fashion show, and inside the Brazilian penitentiary system.

11pm: The Omulu Guanabara Capoeira Group was founded in San Francisco by world-renowned Mestre Preguiça (Wandenkolk Oliveira) in 1986. Omulu Capoeira Group New York, led by Istrutor Cotonete (Nadine Mundo), is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the art of capoeira, and using capoeira as a tool to empower young people. Capoeira is a collective art form developed by Afro-Brazilian slaves in their struggle for freedom and survival. Today it is practiced worldwide, bringing together dance, music, acrobatics and martial arts, and reiterating the historical expression of resistance.

11.30: Maracatu NY is New York's first and only Maracatu group dedicated to the performance and knowledge of traditional Maracatu de Baque Virado of Recife, Brazil.

Midnight: DJ Lightbolt(Bared Soles) spins the illest mix of global dance music & outernational Hip Hop, House, D&B, and all manner of contemporary fusion. For Projectile he'll be spinning up a storm of hothouse Brazilian tracks from samba to funky.

1am: Akim Funk Buddha is the director of the Projectile Arts department of Urban Affairs, and un unparalleled poet, dancer and performer whose work infuses a myriad of cultural traditions and influences. Akim returns from a recent collaboration with Bill T. Jones among other endeavors.

Onward: DJ John-Henry brings the collective down and dirty grind from Rio's Baile Funk. He has performed live percussive DJ sets in London, New York, Rio De Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Washington DC and has collaborated with Kevin Yost, Holmes Ives, Fort Knox Five, and Peter Murphy.
