Joshua Geisler plays bamboo flute, guitar, bass, and builds custom
made musical instruments. With a flowing, highly ornamented style,
his music crosses cultural boundaries by embracing both chromaticism and
microtonality.
He began his musical journey playing the guitar in high school. Next came 4
years at the Berklee College of Music, where he majored in Music Production
and Engineering. It was at Berklee that he started playing bamboo flute and
developing an interest in Indian music. At the same time, he was influenced
by the teachings and philosophy of percussion master Jamey Haddad. After
graduating in the fall of 1998, he moved to upstate New York and studied
North Indian Classical Music with bansuri master Steve Gorn. Then in the
fall of 1999, he traveled to Bombay, India, where he studied flute playing
and flute making under the great Pandit Raghunath Seth for 4 months. Another
trip to India followed in the winter of 2000-2001, where Josh worked as
musical director for the documentary film, Take Me to the River, about the
Maha Kumbh Mela, the Hindu festival that attracted the largest crowd of any
event in the history of the world. There he performed and recorded with
Allahabad based singer Ganesh Kumar, and perfected his skills at
flutemaking. During this trip, he also studied in Varanasi with sarod
virtuoso Pandit Vikash Maharaj.
Presently, Josh is living in Brooklyn, NY where he teaches and performs
regularly. He has shared the stage with the likes of Steve Gorn, Pandit
Raghunath Seth, Kenny Endo, Falu, Alessandra Belloni, David Nichtern and
Drala, Rich Stein, Peter Stoltzman, Matt Kilmer, Adam Strum and the Trees,
Mathias Kunzli, Alan Grubner, Shane Shanahan, Brandon Terzic, Diana Herold,
